SXM Festival has partnered up with the non-profit organizations Parties4Peace! and Peace Boat US, to provide a scholarship for youth from Saint Martin | Sint Maarten to join Peace Boat's 100th Global Voyage during its visit to Patagonia in South America, sailing from Ushuaia, Argentina to Valparaiso, Chile.
They will learn about the United Nations SDGs in an experiential study program “Peace Education and the SDGs in South America,” while sharing your experience of Saint Martin's recent hurricane and the island’s resilience. Onboard the ship, the youth will share their experiences and interest in topics such as sustainability, community development, resilient cities and environmental awareness to enlighten others and bring back knowledge to their communities for further development.
In 2015, 193 United Nations member states came together to define 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to shape the global agenda for sustainable development in the next fifteen years and beyond. Peace Boat US has made promoting and advancing the UN SDGs a key part of its mission. Achieving the SDGs requires mobilization of young people through entrepreneurship, volunteering, research, education and other endeavours.
On this 100th voyage taking place February 18-28 in Patagonia, Peace Boat US will focus on SDG13 (Climate Action) and SDG14 (Life Below Water).
This project focuses on helping local communities improve their living standard and providing educational opportunities for the youth involved in the program and all who donate their time.
SXM Festival is providing two full scholarships including the program fee and travel expenses (an approximate value of $5000 USD each) under the “Youth for the SDGs” theme.
